Walter P. Chrysler founded his company in 1925 and by 1928, he had purchased DeSoto and the Dodge Brothers and then created Plymouth, all to be similar to GM with multiple product lines. The 1930's brought the Mopar Parts Div., where all product lines were supplied from a single source and the corporation became well known for it's design and engineering features.
In 1951, the first Hemi was introduced and by 1955, with designer Virgil Exner leading the creativity department, a new era began - the Imperial Division with it's high class vehicles and the Muscle Car. Chrysler was the first manufacturer with an aerodynamic design (the Airflow), they built the first wind tunnel, introduced unibody construction (greater rigidity with less rattles) which became an industry standard and the first to use an alternator. The Muscle Car really boomed when a street version of the racing Hemi was introduced and today those vehicles are highly sought after collector items. The advent of the front wheel drive was capitalized on by Chrysler and has been a huge success along with their famous, often imitated, minivan. Each generation of minivan brings with it major, innovated ideas that are popular. With routine maintenance, these vehicles run for years.
