The Hyundai Group, founded in 1947, grew into South Korea's largest conglomerate by 2000 with it's major activities including ship building, motor cars, construction, retailing, finance and electronics. The founder, Chung Ju-yung, was very capable of prospering in the world's markets. After he died in 2001, the conglomerate was broken up into individual companies. The new, stand alone Hyundai Motor Company's total production of automobiles places Hyundai as the largest in South Korea and the 5th largest in the world for an automobile manufacturer.
Their first vehicle sold in the US was the Excel in 1986 and sold 126,000 units that year. By 1999, with quality of the finished product at the top of their priority list, they added their 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. By 2004, they were rated 2nd in initial quality by JD Powers only trailing Toyota. In 2005, Hyundai sold 3.7 million vehicles worldwide! With product and company stability on a solid foundation, look for new and exciting vehicles in late 2008 and early 2009.
