Although some production began as early as 1916 under various other company names, Isuzu Motors, Ltd. was formed and the name adopted in 1949. The making of automobiles was their initial focus, but manufacturing of commercial vehicles and diesel engines made them world famous. In 2003, they produced 16 million diesel engines which can be found in vehicles all over the world.
1971 a financial agreement with GM was struck and the first of the Chevrolet LUV pickup trucks arrived in the U.S. Two additional vehicles, the Gemini and the Pup help lift Isuzu sales in the States and by 1996 sales had peaked and GM raised their stake in Isuzu to 49%.
With declining sales in 2001, Isuzu sells their share to Subaru and it becomes Subaru of Indiana in 2002. GM sells their part, but quickly buys back 12%, taking complete control of Isuzu's diesel engine designs and factories. By 2005, the Ascender and the i-series are the only vehicles left in production and in 2006, the 7 passenger Ascender was dropped.
If you need service and repairs on your Isuzu, bring it to Hill's Garage as there are fewer places now than ever that can fix it.
